Around two years ago a friend invited me to an e-sports bar to play Super Smash Bros Melee. I hadn’t played the game before, because I didn’t own a GameCube.
It was quite surprising that people were huddled around CRT TVs, playing a game which was released 15 years ago. And even more so, that people played the game competitively in tournaments.
This was my first peak into the world of Super Smash Bros.
The weekend after first visiting the e-sports bar, I started browsing the internet, looking for more info on SSB.
I came across the Smash Bros documentary, which documents the rise of SSB as a competitive game.
It’s the best gaming documentary I’ve ever seen, and explains why it still has such a die hard following. I highly recommend it.
